Mechanical Special Inspection
Mechanical inspection catches two things nobody else is looking for: equipment that is not seismically anchored, and dampers installed outside their listing.
What we inspect
We inspect mechanical installations against the California Mechanical Code and the approved plans, covering distribution, equipment and the fire and life safety components that intersect with the mechanical scope.
- Duct material, gauge, construction, sealing and support spacing
- Duct insulation type and installation
- Fire, smoke and combination dampers — correct listing, sleeve, retaining angles and access
- Damper installation against the manufacturer's listed installation instructions
- Equipment anchorage, seismic restraint and attachment to structure
- Clearances to combustibles
- Combustion air, flue and vent installation and termination
- Condensate drainage and routing
- Refrigerant piping support, insulation and penetrations
Seismic anchorage of equipment
Anchorage of mechanical equipment is a structural item that routinely falls between the mechanical contractor and the structural inspection scope. We verify equipment anchorage against the approved calculations and the manufacturer's anchorage details, including the anchors actually used, their embedment, and the condition of the supporting structure.
Common questions
Do you inspect fire dampers?
Yes. Fire and combination damper installation is verified against the listing, including sleeve gauge, retaining angle size and overlap, attachment method and clearance for expansion. Access door location and labeling are checked at the same time, since a damper that cannot be accessed cannot be maintained.
Code basis and deliverables
| Code basis | California Mechanical Code (Title 24, Part 4); IBC / CBC Chapter 17 for equipment anchorage |
|---|---|
| Referenced standards | SMACNA duct construction standards; NFPA 90A; UL 555 and 555S for dampers; manufacturer listed installation instructions |
| Deliverables | Mechanical inspection reports, damper logs by location and listing, anchorage verification records |
